The instant of greatest eclipse takes place on 1972 Jul 10 at 19:46:38 TD (19:45:55 UT1). This is 2.9 days after the Moon reaches perigee. During the eclipse, the Sun is in the constellation Gemini. The synodic month in which the eclipse takes place has a Brown Lunation Number of 613.

The eclipse belongs to Saros 126 and is number 45 of 72 eclipses in the series. All eclipses in this series occur at the Moon’s descending node. The Moon moves northward with respect to the node with each succeeding eclipse in the series and gamma increases.

The total solar eclipse of 1972 Jul 10 is followed two weeks later by a partial lunar eclipse on 1972 Jul 26.

These eclipses all take place during a single eclipse season.
