Six Millennium Catalog of Solar Eclipses

1501 to 1600 (1501 CE to 1600 CE)

Fred Espenak

Introduction

The Six Millennium Catalog of Solar Eclipses is organized into a series of sixty 100-year web pages, each one covering a century of solar eclipses. The 100-year table below covers the period 1501 to 1600 (1501 CE to 1600 CE) [1]. The date and time of each eclipse is given for the instant of Greatest Eclipse. Each eclipse date links to a web page containing additional details and a map showing the geographic region of eclipse visibility for that eclipse. A description of each parameter in the catalog table can be found in Key to Catalog of Solar Eclipses.

For an explanation of how eclipses are classified, see Solar Eclipse Basics. The frequency of each eclipse type, the extremes in eclipse magnitude and duration, and other data for the century are presented in the Eclipse Statistics tables following the Catalog of Solar Eclipses. To select a different century, visit the Index to Six Millennium Catalog of Solar Eclipses.

Footnotes

[1] The terms BCE and CE are abbreviations for "Before Common Era" and "Common Era," respectively. They are the secular equivalents to the BC and AD dating conventions. (See: Year Dating Conventions)

Statistics for Solar Eclipses: 1501 to 1600

During the 16th century CE [2], Earth experienced 228 solar eclipses. The following table lists the number of eclipses of each type over this period.

Solar Eclipses: 1501 to 1600
Eclipse Type Symbol Number Percent
All Eclipses - 228100.0%
PartialP 75 32.9%
AnnularA 72 31.6%
TotalT 62 27.2%
HybridH 19 8.3%

Annular and total eclipses can be classified as either central or non-central as follows: 1) Central (two limits), 2) Central (one limit) or 3) Non-Central (one limit). The statistical distribution of these classes during the 16th century CE appears in the following three tables (no Hybrids are included since all are central with two limits).

Annular and Total Eclipses
Classification Number Percent
All 134100.0%
Central (two limits) 128 95.5%
Central (one limit) 3 2.2%
Non-Central (one limit) 3 2.2%
Annular Eclipses
Classification Number Percent
All Annular Eclipses 72100.0%
Central (two limits) 67 93.1%
Central (one limit) 2 2.8%
Non-Central (one limit) 3 4.2%
Total Eclipses
Classification Number Percent
All Total Eclipses 62100.0%
Central (two limits) 61 98.4%
Central (one limit) 1 1.6%
Non-Central (one limit) 0 0.0%

There are a minimum of two and a maximum of five solar eclipses in every calendar year. Statistics for the number of eclipses each year during the century are listed below.

Number of Eclipses Per Year:

The longest and shortest central eclipses of the century as well as largest and smallest partial eclipses appear in the following table.

Extreme Durations and Magnitudes of Eclipses: 1501 to 1600
Extrema Type Date Duration Magnitude
Longest Annular Solar Eclipse 1592 Dec 0311m36s -
Shortest Annular Solar Eclipse 1581 Dec 2500m04s -
Longest Total Solar Eclipse 1583 Jun 1906m23s -
Shortest Total Solar Eclipse 1554 Dec 2400m25s -
Longest Hybrid Solar Eclipse 1564 Jun 0801m44s -

Largest Partial Solar Eclipse 1515 Aug 09 - 0.96855
Smallest Partial Solar Eclipse 1512 Apr 16 - 0.00032

During the century, 3 Saros series begin and 3 Saros series end. The table below gives the Saros series, number of eclipses in the series, the calendar date and whether it is the first or last eclipse in the series.

Begin and End of Saros Series: 1501 to 1600

Calendar

The Gregorian calendar (also called the Western calendar) is internationally the most widely used civil calendar. It is named for Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in 1582. On this website, the Gregorian calendar is used for all calendar dates from 1582 Oct 15 onwards. Before that date, the Julian calendar is used. For more information on this topic, see Calendar Dates.

The Julian calendar does not include the year 0. Thus the year 1 BCE is followed by the year 1 CE (See: BCE/CE Dating Conventions). This is awkward for arithmetic calculations. Years in this catalog are numbered astronomically and include the year 0. Historians should note there is a difference of one year between astronomical dates and BCE dates. Thus, the astronomical year 0 corresponds to 1 BCE, and astronomical year -1 corresponds to 2 BCE, etc..

Eclipse Predictions

The eclipse predictions presented here were generated using the JPL DE406 solar and lunar ephemerides. The lunar coordinates have been calculated with respect to the Moon's Center of Mass.

The largest uncertainty in the eclipse predictions is caused by fluctuations in Earth's rotation due primarily to tidal friction of the Moon. The resultant drift in apparent clock time is expressed as ΔT and is determined as follows:

  1. pre-1950's: ΔT calculated from empirical fits to historical records derived by Morrison and Stephenson (2004)
  2. 1955-present: ΔT obtained from published observations
  3. future: ΔT is extrapolated from current values weighted by the long term trend from tidal effects

A series of polynomial expressions have been derived to simplify the evaluation of ΔT for any time from -2999 to +3000. The uncertainty in ΔT over this period can be estimated from scatter in the measurements.
